Cherry's Story
I am the mother of two wonderful boys, and I want to express my deepest gratitude for the profound impact that Utah's Mental Health/Educational Residential Facility has had on my sons' lives and our entire family. My son has faced numerous challenges from a young age, struggling with social interactions and family dynamics. Diagnosed with ADHD and ODD, he received consistent medical and therapeutic support in our hometown. However, as he grew older, his educational and mental health struggles became more intense.
Unfortunately, he developed Substance Use Disorder and was admitted to multiple acute mental health facilities in our hometown. While these admissions offered temporary stabilization, they lacked the long-term, comprehensive therapy he so desperately needed. In January 2024, our family faced a crisis when my son was deeply hurt by abuse. Through the guidance of a skilled Educational Consultant, he was accepted into an Educational Residential Facility in Utah.
The transition was difficult at first as he adapted to the structured environment, but during our first family visit, we were in awe of the progress he had made. Our son was actively communicating with us and his peers. Though he struggled with low self-esteem and initially hesitated with his schoolwork, the intensive therapy he received helped him turn a corner. He began understanding his coursework, passing his classes, and even participating in sports and Equitherapy.
One of the most touching moments came when he sang “Lean on Me” in front of parents and staff during an Academy choir performance. It was the first time he had ever taken part in something like this, and it was a powerful expression of his growth. He also formed meaningful connections with his peers. He later transitioned to a step-down facility where he continued Equitherapy and participated in a 12-step program for substance use.
Today, my son is a changed young man. He has rediscovered himself, learned to accept and love who he is, and has worked through his past traumas with the help of his therapist. He now communicates more assertively, has a healthy relationship with his brother, and is building stronger ties with our family.
Without the unwavering support of the Mental Health/Educational Residential Facility, we are certain he could have been lost, possibly even losing his life. Thanks to the expert guidance and compassionate care he received, he is on the path to becoming a responsible, self-assured young man.
We are forever grateful for the dedication of the staff, teachers, and therapists who have been with us from day one. These programs are not only essential—they are life-saving. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping guide our son and our family through every step of his recovery.
With the deepest gratitude, Cherry
